Reading/Writing Standard 4: Students apply thinking skills to their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. History Standard 1: Students understand the chronological organization of history and know how to organize events and people into major eras to identify and explain historical relationships. History Standard 6: Students know that religious and philosophical ideas have been powerful forces throughout history. Overview Objective: The students will learn about the Thanksgiving holiday. They will know when it began, what made it begin, when it is celebrated, how people of all religions celebrate, also about the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. Most importantly, the students will learn the true importance of giving thanks and they will recognize what they are thankful for. Assessment Plan: After reading the book Thanksgiving Is… by Gail Gibbons together as a class, the students will answer questions on the class wiki. These questions will be answered by the students using their reading comprehension skills. After answering the questions, each student will comment on one other student’s wiki post. This comment should include ideas that your classmate may have left out, or right answers if their answers are incorrect. After doing this step, each student will create a new post on their blogs. This post will be one paragraph about what they are thankful for and why this Thanksgiving. Learning Context: This is an informative lesson about an upcoming holiday. It is important for students to understand the meaning behind the Thanksgiving holiday. There is a significant meaning behind the holiday that the students need to know. Students need to pay attention to reading the book so that they are able to answer the questions. Time Allotment: 20 minutes to read the book, 20 minutes to answer the questions and respond to another’s post, 15 minutes to create the blog post. Instructional Materials:

Student Materials: · Book · Answers to questions · Computer · Blog Differentiation of Instruction:
Since all students are at different reading levels, I will read the book to the class and encourage the students to follow along. I will read at a medium pace so that the slower readers to not fall behind and so that the fast readers don’t get too ahead. The questions will come directly from the book, so if the students do not remember the exact answer, they can look back in the book to find it. I will be of assistance to any student having trouble with the wiki or the blog. Sequence of Procedures: Opening:
1. Attention getter: Find out what the students already know about the Thanksgiving holiday. Let everyone that chooses to tell what they know. Also ask students what their families do for the holiday.
2. Pass out books to everyone in the class. Tell them that I will be reading but that they must follow along. Inform them that they will have to answer questions that are coming from the book so they will really need to comprehend what they are reading.
3. Once all of the books are handed out explain the purpose of this lesson. The purpose is to learn about the Thanksgiving holiday and what began it. Body:
4. Everyone open your book and put your finger on the word that I am reading.
5. Begin reading the book.
6. While reading, occasionally stop on a word and have the students say it to make sure that they are following along.
7. Once the book is over, reflect on what we read and what the students already knew about the holiday. Assessment:
8. Put up the questions to be answered on the overhead projector.
9. Tell students that they have 20 minutes to answer the questions in complete sentences. They must answer the question and explain their answer.
10. They will answer the questions directly onto the wiki.
11. After they are done with their answers, they must read classmates response and make a 5 sentence comment about it.
12. Once those steps are completed, the students have 15 minutes to create a new blog post. The post will be a paragraph long and they will explain (with detail) what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving.
13. After this is completed, have all of the students return their books to the table and wait for the rest of the class to be done. Closure:
14. Remind the students what we have just learned and have them keep it all in mind while they are celebrating the holiday. References:
